We took a ten hour bus journey from Salta in the north of Argentina, to San Pedro de Atacama in the north of Chile, punctuated with just one stop. Bus travel is comfortable in South America though; this bus had fully reclining seats. Since there isn’t a real train network or a discount airline on the continent, a lot of people get around by bus. Exhausted by the early start, we slept for the first hour or so. Some kind of loud Chinese comedic theater was shown on the monitors for the sole purpose of awakening us. Some of the journey was the same route as the "Truck to the Clouds," and the landscape was barren and beautiful for the whole trip. The Argentinian immigration building, above, in a featureless dusty landscape, was particularly lonesome. I had my first feelings of altitude sickness on the drive.
